Dr Caldwell’s House
Physicians Role
The houseman’s job is very wide ranging and difficult to describe.
These are some of the general and specific features that I regard as important. 1) To seek help from the
SHO, Registrar or myself whenever
you feel out of your depth. 2) To know the names and locations of all inpatients under
my care. 3) To be
aware of the relevant history, examination findings, working diagnoses and
investigations of patients who are your responsibility. 4) To update the medical notes during every ward round, and
at all interventions. 5) To arrange investigations and obtain results as soon as
possible. 6) To provide the secretaries with a list of all admissions, the day after a take day or weekend. 7) To legibly write in clinical notes and drug and fluid
prescription charts. 8) To attend ward rounds punctually, or inform of reasons
for delays. 9) To complete the discharge form fully, legibly and promptly, and to arrange post discharge outpatient tests (eg exercise tests) and ensure outpatient appointments are made if needed. You are also responsible for dicatating a very short summary of the admission. The notes are held in my office and Laura will provide you with a dictaphone. 10) To be available to answer patients’ and relatives
questions. 11) To attend lunchtime education sessions. 12) To smile, joke and be happy at least one day in 6 months |
